History
Once upon a time in
Notre Dame de Bellecombe...
In the 11th and 12th centuries the Barons of Faucigny invited a number of Benedictine Monks to the area to convert the local population. It was these monks who cleared the land to create the landscape we see today.
The oldest deed bearing the name "Belle Combe" is dated 4th November 1275. This seems to have been a name used by the locals, as in 1411, the official name of the village was Sainte Marie des Déserts.
In 1471, at the request of the inhabitants, the name was changed definitively to Notre Dame de Bellecombe.
”Belle” refers more to importance than beauty.
Combe = small valley.
In 1860 Savoie became part of France under the Treaty of Turin.
The villages of Val d'Arly, which had been part of Megève, became an integral part of the canton of Ugine.
At the beginning of the 20th century tourism took its first timid steps and the Mont Charvin Hotel was built in 1902. At first, tourism was only a summer activity but, following the impulsion given by Megève, winter tourism gradually started to grow. To accommodate the first winter visitors, other hotels (Beauséjour, Bellevue, etc) were built by local people, who were already starting to turn from farming.
In 1928 the shooting and military training club, created in 1910, became a ski club. In 1959 it became the Club des Sports. Thirteen of the club's members have since worn the colours of the French ski team.
In the winter of 1937/38 the first ski lift, a sled-tow, carried 10 skiers half-way up Mont-Reguet.
In 1957 the ski area extended as far as Mt-Rond.
1963 saw the start of the property boom. (The Chardet apartments in 1967, Alpages in 1970, etc)
With the link to Les Saisies, opened for the 2005-2006 season, the resort has become the heart of the new Espace Diamant ski area.
